Further observations on the effects of thyroid hormone preparations on cholesterolemia and atherogenesis in cholesterol-fed cockerels.

چکیده
Administration of large doses of thyroid hormone preparations (desiccated thyroid powder, thyroxine, triiodothyronine, diiodotyrosine) to cholesterol-fed chicks was associated with decreased rate of weight gain and partial inhibition of hypercholesterolemia. Consistent, definitive inhibition of aorta and coronary atherogenesis was not observed, despite partial suppression of hypercholesterolemia. Potassium iodide and thyroidstimulating hormone of the anterior pituitary were essentially without effect.

Failure of D- and L-thyroxine to protect cholesterol and oil fed cockerels against coronary atherogenesis.
• It has been demonstrated that thyroid hormone and its analogues reduce plasma cholesterol levels both in hypoand in euthyroid individuals; and also that D-thyroxine is much less toxic and less calorigenic than L-thyroxine. Katz and Pick reported that thyroid hormone given to chicks on an atherogenic diet, either as desiccated thyroid or thyroxine, suppressed hypercholesterolemia, but the effe...

THE higher incidence of coronary atherosclerosis in young male as compared with young female humans is well established as are similar sex differences in susceptibility in some other species. The administration of female sex hormones to cholesterol-fed cockerels has been reported to have beneficial prophylactic as well as therapeutic effects on coronary atherosclerosis. In one study reported by...

Effects of dietary proteins, methionine and vitamins on plasma lipids and atherogenesis in cholesterol-fed cockerels.
Methionine deficiency in the presence of a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet aggravates atherogenesis in the cockerel. High-protein, high-vitamin supplementation suppresses the atherogenic effect of a cholesterol-fat-containiiig diet. High-protein supplementation alone had a suppressive effect; high-vitamin supplementation had no effect. However, the combined protein and vitamin supplement was th...
